The Custard Stand

The chili WVU made official

The Custard Stand is one of those places that's so much more than a funny name. This is the place people drive to Webster Springs to get a taste of a recipe Angie Cowger's grandfather perfected about a hundred years ago — and now it's the official chili of WVU athletics, and on shelves in fifteen states. Angie and Dee opened the stand back in 1991, and not long after were selling by the gallon. They turned the old car wash out back into a USDA kitchen in order to keep up. In 2016 they took their chili to Shark Tank — no deal, but the orders rolled in anyway.

We'll be straight with you: we know this one by its record and its regulars. I can't believe I didn't know this story, and worse, I haven't been there yet! But Webster Springs sits in that quiet stretch between the Highland Scenic country and Elkins where a good bite gets hard to find, and a stand with thirty-some ice cream flavors and a walk-up window is exactly what you're hoping turns up out there. Open year-round — just know the dining room closes an hour before the window does.
