April 16 - Motorcycle Rally for Oral Health The West Virginia Healthy Kids and Families Coalition, a project of the West Virginia Council of Churches, is sponsoring a Motorcycle Rally for Oral Health on , beginning at Laidley Field in Charleston to raise money for a statewide oral health fund. Oral health is a major problem for both children and adults in West Virginia. By age 8, 35.5% of West Virginia school-aged children have untreated dental decay and 65.6% have had at least one cavity.# Over thirty-seven percent of West Virginia adults over 65 have lost all of their teeth, compared to 18.5% nationally.# According to Kaiser State Health Facts, “Untreated chronic oral infection can contribute to a lifetime of poor health including diabetes and heart disease”# and there is evidence suggesting that there may be a link “between periodontal disease and premature delivery and low birth weight babies.”# To make a difference, the West Virginia Council of Churches has established an oral health fund with the United Methodist Foundation. Proceeds from the fund will help West Virginians get the dental help they need. You can help by being a volunteer or sponsor of the West Virginia Motorcycle Rally for Oral Health, promoting the rally, and by participating in the rally.
